This course is focused on meeting the demands of the higher level marking bands across all three of the specification components. It examines the characteristics of work produced by students working at the highest levels and provides a range of teaching approaches and materials designed to ensure students achieve 7-9 in AQA GCSE Biology.

  • Explore exemplar materials to identify characteristics of outstanding work

Focused deep dive on the demands of the GCSE Biology specification

10.00 – 11.00am
  • Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of our own teaching practice
  • Examine the assessment demands of all components including the use of assessment objectives as a framework for assessment
  • Consider the most effective models for delivery of the course to ensure effective assessment practice across a 3 year vs 2 year KS4 curriculum.
  • Review characteristics of Grade 7-9 GCSE students in AQA GCSE Biology
  • Exploring the Examiner’s Reports from previous exam sessions – what students need to do to ensure that they achieve the highest grades

Trusted strategies to achieving grades 7-9 in Paper 1

11.15 – 12.30pm
  • Strategies for embedding the knowledge needed for the written exam
  • Exploring practical activities for teaching Biology topics
  • Examining strong exemplar responses for addressing difficult topics
  • Revision strategies to move students from Grade 6-7 to Grade 8-9


12.30 – 1.30pm

Paper  2 – Tackling the challenging parts for Grade 7 – 9 students

1.30 – 2.30pm
  • Review examples of extended response questions at Grades 7-9: what top level students do
  • Characteristics of the most successful candidates
  • Building How Science Works skills – introducing students to the course, arming them with skills and the confidence to work on their own
  • Enabling students to develop and refine their own work
  • Examining effective ways to develop Assessment Objective skills in Biology

Afternoon break

2.30 – 2.40pm

Strategies to really stretch top end students

2.40 – 3.40pm
  • Discover ways to take a good GCSE scientist and make them a great scientist
  • Challenges that face your more able students in exams
  • Practical solutions to proficiently assess able students both formatively and summative in the lead up to the exams.
  • Focus on the extended questions: what does a grade 7/9/ candidate need to do?

Prishilla Narindar is currently Deputy head of Faculty and Science lead at Henry Cort College. With over 10 years’ experience in KS3 and KS4 science curriculum delivery in mainstream education and private tuition, she has led the local Science GCSE collaboration development group that partners with 8 schools and colleges. Prishilla has also successfully led active learning, cognitive load association and assessment workshops whilst coaching PGCE and ITT students for local partnerships. She has also successfully piloted the able students programme in collaboration with local secondary schools, and has worked with Hampshire HIAS group to develop and strengthen science curriculum delivery.
