ABOUT THIS CONFERENCE

This NEW PROGRAMME FOR 2023 will provide students with a motivational informative and valuable revision day on GCSE French. The day is specially designed by current senior examiners, who will give expert advice, guidance, examples, focusing on the key points to maximise students’ exam achievements. This conference is targeted at AQA and Edexcel GCSE students

  • Using the paper to your advantage – setting yourself up to succeed!

Paper 4: Developing your Writing Skills for Exam Success

11.00 – 11.35am
  • The shorter writing tasks: what the examiners expect to see and how to ensure that this is what you put in.
  • The extended writing tasks: a look at the examiners’ reports – what gets a Grade 8 – 9
  • Making your writing more interesting with sophisticated language
  • Student activity: Which is the best? Student marking exercise
  • The English-French translation – focusing on tenses and structure.

11.35 – 11.55am
  • Submit your questions for the experts

The Writing Exam: How to Gain full Marks for the 90 and 150 word questions

  • The extended writing tasks: a look at the examiners’ reports – what gets a Grade 8 – 9
  • What is the examiner looking to see?
  • ACTIVITY: How to move your grades up by a whole level

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Jonathan Mumford is a current AQA examiner specialising in Speaking and Writing skills at GCSE level. He has 16 years’ experience of teaching both GCSE French and Spanish, consistently achieving top results with students at a Merseyside mixed comprehensive school. He is a teacher trainer at Liverpool Hope University and has 8 years’ experience as a Head of Languages. He is passionate about languages and ensuring language students aim high and succeed.

Katherine Golding is a former Head of Department and current teacher of MFL of longstanding experience. She has successfully prepared students for GCSE (AQA), A-Level (Edexcel) and Pre-U examinations in French in current and previous iterations of the respective specifications and holds the SSAT Diploma for Innovative Teaching. She currently teaches French and German in mainstream comprehensive education in South Northants and is a marker for both Pearson and AQA.

Students in her cohorts have enjoyed the highest percentage of Grades 4-9 in the MFL Department year on year and have gone on to study languages at Oxbridge and other Russell Group institutions. She has both current and historic experience and success in training both new teachers and PGCE students in the skills needed to teach both KS3 and GCSE classes effectively, promoting student uptake and achieving exam success.
