New to teaching GCSE Eduqas English Language and English Literature

This course will introduce you to the Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications and guide you through the planning, implementation and delivery of a curriculum to enable your students to achieve success in these examinations. Led by Owen Jermy who is a senior marker for Eduqas and has taught this examination board for over 20 years, the course will introduce you to the specific features of the examinations, demonstrating teaching and learning ideas for both language and literature which will stretch and challenge all students to reach their potential. The course will also use feedback from previous Eduqas examinations to explore what is expected of students, and ways that you can use this information to inform the planning of your whole curriculum.

  • Explore and analyse mark schemes, examiner reports and sample answers.
  • Take away ideas for teaching and learning in preparation for the examinations.
  • Develop ideas for curriculum planning to build towards the qualifications.

  • What are the key challenges offered by these examinations?

10.40 – 11.00am

Preparing to teach Eduqas English Language: the reading sections

11.00 – 11.45am
  • What reading challenges do we need to prepare students for?
  • An analysis of the questions across both components.
  • How should students prepare to answer questions on writer’s craft?
  • What are the pitfalls of the evaluation questions?
  • How should students tackle the comparison question in component 2?

Preparing to teach Eduqas English Language: the writing sections

11.45 – 12.30pm
  • How should students be prepared for the narrative writing in component 1?
  • What are the best approaches to transactional writing in component 2?
  • How to use the mark schemes to support your teaching and learning.
  • A discussion on the significance of technical accuracy in both components.


12.30 – 1.30pm

How to approach Eduqas GCSE English Literature – Component 1

1.30 – 2.15pm
  • An analysis of the Shakespeare questions and how the mark scheme is applied.
  • Considering some creative approaches to the teaching of the poetry anthology?
  • How should you support students in using context across both components?

Afternoon break

2.15 – 2.30pm

How to approach Eduqas GCSE English Literature – Component 2

2.30 – 3.15pm
  • The modern text – which one and ideas on how to develop students’ understanding.
  • Engaging and creative approaches to the pre-twentieth century text.
  • Activities to encourage students to respond to the unseen poetry.

Preparing for the examinations

3.15 – 3.45pm
  • A discussion of tactics for the different style questions.
  • Activities which will enable students to reach the highest grades.
  • Revision activities, especially for the full texts.

Owen Jermy is a highly experienced English teacher, with 25 years as a Head of English in 3 schools in different parts of the country and has taught Eduqas GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature for more than 20 years. He was an Assistant Head teacher with responsibility for Teaching and Learning. He is a team leader and senior examiner for GCSE English Literature. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered College for Teaching (FCCT). He now teaches English on a part-time basis and as an authority writes on a range of educational issues.
