ABOUT THIS COURSE

In a recent survey 90% of school leaders reported an increase of students experiencing anxiety or stress over the last five years. The same study found that 80% of young people have reported that exam pressure has significantly impacted on their mental health.

Research shows that pupils who can set goals, manage stress and organise their school work achieve higher grades. Studies also show that pupils who use problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles also do better academically. It is becoming increasingly more apparent that schools have a crucial role to play in supporting the development of these key skills that promote academic achievement alongside emotional wellbeing and resilience for all.

This NEW course is designed for all those responsible for supporting students’ academic success and positive wellbeing. The course will provide teachers with a range of techniques and approaches that can be used immediately to support students and indeed colleagues with dealing with stress and maintaining positive mental wellbeing.

  • Understand what is meant by wellbeing in an educational context and explore and discuss the research regarding the link between student wellbeing and achievement.
  • Practically explore effective tools that can be used immediately to support students with stress during high pressure times in particular during exam preparation.

  • Examine the research between student well-being and achievement
  • How do we currently support our student’s wellbeing during exam time?
  • Explore examples of whole school approaches.
  • Gain an understanding of how to determine what interventions students need and the importance of signposting.

Practical approaches to supporting students with managing stress

Delegates will gain an understanding of how to support students to:

  • Understand their own stress and recognise physical symptoms.
  • Use breathing exercises to calm nerves or anxiety
  • Make sense of anxious thoughts-exploring the distortions and gaining perspective.
  • Develop positive self-talk techniques.
  • Utilise visualisation tools to support revision and exam preparation.
  • Engage with mindfulness techniques to develop focus and concentration.

  • Examine practical and creative ways of integrating these techniques into lessons and across the curriculum.

Practically explore resources for use in PSHE and pastoral time to support stress management and wellbeing

Delegates will gain an understanding of how to support students to:

  • Develop a growth mindset to become capable and resilient when faced with challenges
  • Enhance their assertiveness skills- practical resources for the classroom
  • Use time management and goal setting skills during times of high stress.

Delegates will explore a scheme of work that they can take away that includes 6 lessons to support students in the lead up to exams.

Developing wellbeing coaching skills to support students and colleagues

In this final section Delegates will have a chance to develop their coaching skills in order to support conversations with staff and students regarding wellbeing. This section will cover:

  • How to conduct 1:1 conversations with students and colleagues using the GROW model of coaching to structure conversations
  • Explore Scaling and solution focused approaches
  • Effective questioning and identifying ways forward for a coachee
  • Practice Progressive Muscular Relaxation as a way to aid relaxation and support wellbeing
