This intensive, one-day interactive course has been designed to give all teachers of the New 2017 A Level Specifications pure Mathematics a variety of stimulating activities that can be easily integrated into teaching programmes to enhance teaching and student achievement levels in the second year.

The course will provide teachers with a range of practical approaches on how to teach and assess the key topics on the specification with strategies to enhance grades throughout. The course leader, a highly experienced teacher and examiner, will give teachers a deeper understanding of what students need to know and in what depth, in order to be able to access top grades.

11.15 - 11.35am: Discussion: coffee break


11.35 - 12.30pm: Methods for teaching differentiation and integration

  • Understanding the chain rule, product rule and quotient rule
  • Building a thorough understanding of differentiation techniques
  • Answering tough calculus questions, gain an understanding of integration techniques
  • Dealing with the multi-step, more wordy questions

12.30 – 1.30pm: Lunch and informal discussion


1.30 - 2.00pm: Looking at modelling in the new 2017 Maths A Level

  • The changes in the new Pure Maths structure
  • Key content and assessment changes: implications
  • Modelling using exponential and logarithmic functions

2.00 – 2.50pm: Teaching vectors: practical demonstration session

  • Advanced teaching methods for building an understanding of 3D vectors
  • Understanding the equations of a line in 2 or 3 dimensions
  • Algebraic and geometric approaches
  • Scalar product and the angle between 2 lines
  • Encouraging mathematical discussion

2.50 – 3.20pm: Improving outcomes in Trigonometry

  • Understanding identities
  • Solving trigonometric problems
  • Strategies to engage students in effective mathematical discussion
  • Teaching ideas that promote high level problem solving

3.20 – 3.30pm: Final discussion, questions, afternoon tea and depart

Rose Jewell

Rose Jewell MA (Oxon) is an experienced sixth form Mathematics teacher both in schools and sixth form colleges. While she was in charge of the GCSE at her previous college, the college was identified by the DfE as one of the leading providers in the country with one of the highest pass rates in the country. She is a Senior Examiner at A Level and a Deliverer of Training for a major awarding body. She is the founder of JewellMaths providing training, tutoring and resources.
