ABOUT THIS COURSE
Leadership comes from vision; strategy concerns the mechanisms by which that vision becomes reality. This new course will encourage you to look at the qualities that make leadership effective and will help you work with others to develop outstanding leadership of your department.
This course will focus on leadership, the curriculum, teaching and learning, target setting, monitoring and evaluating progress and attainment. It will also look at how your vision can be shared to promote an enabling curriculum that supports enquiry and curiosity as well as personal wellbeing and ultimately, employability. Led by a former Head of Department for Geography, Senior School Leader and former Chief Examiner, the course will provide detailed and accurate methods for making your department outstanding.

- Reflecting upon and developing ways of approaching the key challenges faced by Heads of Geography
- Dealing with the problem of drop-off at A-level: ideas and strategies to retain students to Key Stage 5

Leading outstanding Teaching and Learning for Geography
- What the highest quality Geography Departments look like
- Strategies for establishing, maintaining and promoting high quality Teaching and Learning
- How a Head of Department can model outstanding teaching and learning across the department
- Supporting your colleagues with innovative teaching within the Geography department
- Using data effectively for monitoring and feedback, to lead to excellent performance
- Boosting attainment of the least able across the Key Stages
- Stretching and challenging the most able – key strategies and approaches
- Working with partners and outside agencies, including the National Trust, RGS, GA and Field Studies Council

- Strategies for maintaining the highest quality of teaching and student performance over time
- Working with the SLT; the confidence to champion and compromise

- Managing the budget to create the conditions for Outstanding performance

Developing a successful Curriculum for Geography
- Assessing your current curriculum models against the need to create a successful environment which supports teaching and learning excellence
- Developing a rich curriculum for Geography: creating the best experience for all students
- Ensuring progress for all students across the Key Stages
- How to support appropriate and relevant tracking and assessment to promote student outcomes
- Ensuing the inclusion of activities which promote learning, independence and a love of Geography

Promoting the Geography Department
- New media approaches to sell and support the department, within and outside the school
- Making sure Geography is seen as a leading department
- Working across the curriculum and promoting geographical ideas
David Payne
David is a highly experienced former Head of Department and Senior Leader, as well as adviser in his local authority for improving departmental and school performance, especially in Geography. He is a current A level and GCSE examiner and a Chief Examiner for a recent specification for a major awarding body. He is a well-known and very experienced national trainer and author of student textbooks.
