ABOUT THIS COURSE

This revised course is intended for both experienced and new teachers who wish to ensure the high achievement of students in AQA A level Biology. It is designed to offer strategies and practical advice that both adds the ‘WOW’ factor in teaching while at the same time ensure top grade examination success.

The course will discuss the challenges and provide strategies for teachers of mixed ability groups to ensure students achieve the highest grades possible. The course will focus on practical teaching of the AQA specifications the light of the 2017 and 2018 examinations and teachers will be able to take away a range of effective approaches provided first hand by a subject specialist with examining experience.

Issues arising from the 2018 linear A level Biology Exam Series

  • Discussion and review the summer 2018 exam papers
  • Challenge, demands and outcomes, including feedback from AQA
  • Review of how this should impact on our teaching of the course

10.30 – 11.30am
Outstanding Teaching: Paper 1 (topics 1 -4), including relevant practical skills

  • Examples of outstanding lesson plans for Topics 1 – 4, especially in the harder topics such as immunology, meiosis, dissociation curves
  • Ways to use exam questions effectively as an aid to highlight the importance of the stem of a question and command words
  • Approaches to developing student responses to topics such mass transport, protein synthesis
  • How to sequence answers to longer response questions successfully

11.30 – 11.45am
Discussion: coffee break


11.45 – 12.45pm
Outstanding Teaching: Paper 2 (topics 5-8) including relevant practical skills

  • Engaging strategies and approaches to ‘liven’ up the delivery of harder topics teach respiration, nerve transmission and gene expression
  • Evaluate strategies for dealing with data related questions
  • Explore a range of activities and models to fill the gaps where students struggle eg; in nerve impulse, transmission, muscles contraction, osmoregulation, inheritance
  • Evaluate what the AQA examiner is looking for Paper 2 responses, including feedback from 2018

Lunch and informal discussion


1.45 – 2.30pm
The Mathematical Content: preparing to be exam ready

  • How to approach teaching maths questions to develop effective skills in data related questions
  • Supporting students with maths skills they need to demonstrate when handling data
  • Critical analysis of experimental data
  • Ways to address misconceptions with statistical tests, with your students
  • Effective teaching that incorporates maths rich biological activities

2.30 – 2.40pm
Discussion: afternoon tea


2.40 – 3.30pm
Papers 1, 2 and 3: Assessment of the Practical skills in the exam questions

  • Evaluating the best approaches to integrating the 12 Practical Investigations into your teaching
  • Understanding the practical assessment in different types of questions in paper 1, 2 and 3
  • Identifying where students struggle to gain the marks in Practical skills and how they can maximise their achievement

Dr Harjit K Singh

Dr Harjit K Singh is an experienced teacher and senior examiner for A level Biology. She has taught and examined A Level Biology for over 25 years, IB Biology for 8 years as well as BTEC Applied Science. She is a published author of the Key Skills and Knowledge Booster Biology and co-author of Key Skills and Knowledge Booster BTEC Science Applied and Vocational courses. She has presented many biology courses for teachers, student revision conferences and online web conferences. She is also involved in presenting international IB student revision courses.
