This course is designed for all teachers looking to improve the overall performance of their students in Paper 2. The course focuses on ways of teaching the key areas of challenge for many students, at all levels, including accessing the higher grades.

The course will explore examiner expectations, develop subject knowledge, present resources.  The sessions are workshop style, with opportunities to ask questions, and to engage in discussion.

  • Basic vocabulary and techniques which examiner reports note that students sometimes lack or forget.
  • Financial Markets; separating structures, signals, and noise for higher ability students
  • Dealing with complex news stories concerned with financial markets

 11:00am-12:30pm: Session 2

  • Explaining financial regulation and their purposes for AO2 and AO4
  • Linking financial markets to monetary policy and technological change for synoptic development; applying lessons from paper 1 for AO2 and AO3 points; looking ahead to paper 3

12:30pm-1:20pm : Lunch and informal discussion

1:20pm-2:30pm: Session 3

  • Macroeconomic theories, metrics, and analysis in AQA Economics.
  • Directing extracurricular reading and practice
  • Linking AO2 and A04 in a coherent, relevant, and substantiated manner
  • Student issues with trade, exchange rates, and relevant examples of globalisation/deglobalisation and ‘Brexit’ issues

2:30pm-2:40pm  Short break

2:40pm-3:30pm: Session 4

  • Case studies on Monetary Policy Developments and how to explain them for maximum A02/3 points : QE and ultra-low interest rates and how to place them in context and analyse in the light of inflationary pressures for A03 and A04 points
  • Building answers to questions in which students might be invested and showing how to apply economic principles across potentially disruptive topics; Infrastructure, Deficits, The environment, and Development case studies and tips.

3:30pm – 3:45pm: Session 5

  • Feedback from examiner reports and mark schemes; teaching Paper 2 in 2021 and anticipating news for relevant and substantiated analysis;
  • Making the most of AQA resources

Dr Martin Meenagh

Dr Martin Meenagh is a former independent school Principal, Head of Economics, and Director of Studies. He has been teaching economics for twenty-five years at a variety of institutions and privately, and has experience of AA, Pearson, OCR, CCEA, and IB examinations. He has also taught extensively on engaging and focussed alumni courses for US ivy league programmes in America and Britain, taught at the University of Oxford, and is a non-practising barrister. He now encourages students from a variety of schools to confidently develop their knowledge and skills via private online tuition.
