This exciting, interactive and refreshed A level AQA PE programme will be delivered in a face to face format (unless government regulations mean we have to move it online). The day will provide students with a motivational, informative and valuable revision day. Specially designed by practicing senior examiners, the day will give your students expert advice, guidance and examples on how to improve their performance in their examinations.
The conference will help your students understand exactly what is expected of them in Paper 1 and Paper 2 exams and equip them with the subject key knowledge and understanding of key topics they will need to succeed.
They will also gain guidance on how they should answer exam questions to gain maximum marks, work through during the conference, interacting with the examiners, on good and less good responses, and ask questions to the experts.

10.00 – 10.20am: Introduction: Overview of the examinations with reference to past papers

10.20 – 10.50am: Paper 1 – Applied Anatomy and Physiology
- Exploring the major aspects of applied anatomy and physiology
- How questions are likely to be phrased and how to answer them!
- Key tips and guidance on pitfalls and success criteria in this area
- Ways to remember some of the key terms/ systems/ processes
10.50 – 11.20am: Skill acquisition (with a key focus on 8 and 15 mark questions)
- Deciphering the 8 and 15 mark questions – adapting knowledge to the question – demonstration of techniques to cater for the mix of AO1, 2 and 3
- Scaffolding and planning essays to access the highest marks –what really works
- How to develop an eye for synoptic links
- Reference to areas of skill acquisition and how these may be examined.
11.20 – 11.30am: Break – Submit questions to the experts to win a prize!
11.30 – 12.00pm: Sport and society
- Investigating sport from Industrial and post-industrial sport
- Using video sources to enhance your knowledge and application
- Answering questions by making sense of what the examiners want: how to ensure strong exam performance on Sport in Society
12.00 – 12.30pm: Exercise physiology (JB)
- A look at the aspects of diet to be covered, with a focus on nutrition and how these elements may be examined
- How to succeed in the exams and meet the assessment criteria with a look at the knowledge, application and evaluation of training methods. (Theories and concepts will be examined using practical examples)
- Exam techniques and synoptic links

- How to deal with some of the harder concepts and ways to remember the fundamental aspects
- Factors affecting horizontal displacement of projectiles
- Factors affecting flight paths of different projectiles – Shot put, badminton shuttle
- Vector components of parabolic flight
- Maximising marks on biomechanics and how it may form a synoptic link
14.00 – 14.30pm: Sports Psychology
- Looking at some of the more complex aspects- e.g. achievement motivation, personality, Vealey’s model and self-efficacy
- How to satisfy the examiner by not falling into common error areas
- Linking topical areas with other areas synoptically and developing a strategy for synoptic extended questions
14.30 – 14.40 Afternoon break
14.40 – 15.10pm: Sport and society and technology in sport
- Explaining positive and negative impacts of the role of technology in sport
- What makes a successful performance at A level?
- How to structure and develop extended questions.
15.10 – 15.20pm: Final revision ideas and plenary
Ross is senior examiner, principal moderator and coursework advisor for A Level PE for a major awarding body. He works as an educational consultant and lecture in Educational Leadership, Management and Change at Edge Hill University. As a PE specialist, he has managed one of the country’s largest and most successful A level PE departments. He is the author and co-author of numerous textbooks and articles, including AQA A level PE Book 1 and AQA A level PE Book 2 (Hodder, 2016). He has worked with Premiership football clubs and varying sports people as well as in the corporate world to facilitate effective leadership.
Jackie is an experienced teacher of 16 years, with 5 years working as an AST and as a lead practitioner focussing on whole school teaching and learning. Her results at all levels are consistently above National average. She specialises in active teaching and learning approaches. Jackie has taught all aspects of A Level and BTEC and specialises in physiology whereby these engaging ideas allow students to grasp difficult concepts. She is fully involved in the examination process at GCSE, BTEC and A Level with both AQA and Pearson and has been an integral part of virtual resource building for the developing PE resource mypeexam.org
