ABOUT THIS COURSE
This course is designed for all teachers of Pearson BTEC level 3 Performing Arts (2016), who are looking for teaching approaches and strategies to support their students in aiming for a Distinction across the course. Emphasis will be on the examination units (Units 1 and 3) and choosing appropriate prof. works to study and perform for the optional units. The course will allow teachers the appropriate pedagogy to approach the course with confidence.

10.30 to 11.30am: Unit 1 Investigating practitioners work
- preparing for three unseen questions
- Selecting the appropriate practitioner
- Approaches to the research process
- Looking at learner work against the assessment criteria – what are the examiners looking for and teaching those skills
11.30 to 11.45am: Break
11.45- 12.45: Unit 3 Group workshop performance
- Unit overview
- How to prepare the students for the release of the exam paper
- Meet the exam requirements
- A look at the written requirements and discussion on example distinction work (Milestones 1, 2,3 and 5)
12.45-1.45pm: Lunch
1.45pm – 2.30pm: Teaching the internal assessment units
- Overview of choices available
- Exploring the Unit Content
- Idea share for Unit 2 ‘Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance’
- Selecting appropriate optional units to gain distinctions (i.e. unit 19, 12 or 27)
2.30 – 2.45pm: afternoon break
2.45pm-3pm: Managing your BTEC
- A look at ad explanation of the expected paperwork
- BTEC requirements, rules and procedures
- Networking and gathering resources to support you and your students on the course
3pm – 3.30: Planning and networking
- How to plan the course across the two years
- Writing your assessment plan; advice and guidance
3.45 – 4.00pm: Questions and depart
Jo Mason
Jo Mason is a highly experienced BTEC practitioner with many years of examining and teaching success. Jo has been a Head of the Performing Arts faculty for 10 years as well as teaching dance, drama and Acting. Jo has been teaching BTEC for 15 years. She is a freelance BTEC consultant with high levels of experience in running teacher and department training courses for performing arts teachers across the UK as well as creating and offering resources for the BTEC and KS3 performing arts curriculum. Jo is well-known for her clear and honest approach to these courses from a teacher’s perspective.
