ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course is a must for all teachers of A-level Dance who are looking for advice, tips and techniques to raise achievement in the Component 2 examination for their students and maximize their full potential.  The course will cover all of Component 2 with particular focus on Rambert and Rooster and within the Options, particular reference to Independent Contemporary British Dance Scene. This will include using the Examiner reports to develop teaching strategies and making sure that students have developed the skills, knowledge and confidence to reach the highest mark bands.

Understanding the demands of Component 2 and feedback from 2019

  • Key features of Component 2 and where students struggled in 2019
  • Using examination mark schemes effectively with students to raise attainment – and what not to do!
  • Considering the impact of Examiner Reports on teaching ideas
  • Understanding the scope of the Compulsory, set work Rooster and Area of Study, Rambert

The Constituent features of the compulsory set work: Rooster

  • Exploring the key features and teaching points of the Compulsory Set Work, Rooster, and Area of Study Rambert
  • Structuring work on the Dance – the constituent features
  • Unpick previous exam questions, link to the criteria, and focus on the questions and question types
  • Leading students to understand the genre and style of Rambert from their own research
  • Approaches for developing high level thinking with A level Dance students – teaching with the end point in mind

11.00 – 11.15am
Break and informal discussion


11.15 – 12.30pm
Preparing students for the Compulsory Component 2 Section A 

  • Analysing and exploring the context and practitioners of Rambert Dance Compnay- Morrice, Chesworth, Bruce, Cunnigham, Tetley, Davies
  • Making illuminating connections in examination between dance performance, society and culture for Rambert Dance Company and Rooster
  • Applying knowledge of stylistic features of Rambert Dance Company and how these relate to the genre
  • How to apply context and knowledge when answering questions
  • Looking at student exemplar answers and how to improve them
  • Feedback from 2019 – what were examiners looking for and how to produce high level examination answers in your Dance teaching

Section B: the Optional set works

  • Examining the significance of the character of the dance and its effectiveness in communicating the subject matter
  • Look at the features of dance works: what do students need to know to get the best marks
  • Considering the individual choreographic approach of different practitioners
  • Answering 25 mark essay questions: where A-level Dance students struggle
  • Teaching Excellent essay technique throughout the course: building up across the two
    years
  • Looking at exemplar answers and improvement strategies

The types and styles of examination questions

  • Analysing exemplar questions and answers Component 2 to see what differentiates the quality of answer
  • Where students lose marks on short answer questions and how to avoid this
  • Answering the questions using relevant analysis and interpretation
  • Writing coherent and detailed answers in exams
  • Gaining assessment and examination strategies for focused answers
  • Building examination skills across the course – where should students be by the end of Year 12?

Jason Bradley

Jason Bradley trained as a professional dancer at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance before becoming the senior dancer/teacher at Ludus Dance company. In the last 19 years he has been teaching GCSE and A Level Dance with a great deal of success. In that time he has built up a bank of resources which have been honed over time to provide excellent provision for students and teachers. Whilst Ofsted no longer grade observations in the period where they did, Jason continually received outstanding grade 1’s on each visit he took part in. He is passionate about teaching and passionate about sharing skills and good practice.
