ABOUT THIS COURSE

This NEW course will support Heads of Drama, Heads of Performing Arts and subject teachers to provide students with a broad, rich and worthwhile drama curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4.  In the light of the new OfSTED framework, the course will provide proven curriculum planning ideas which provide the depth required, ideas for enrichment and teaching techniques to ensure that students of all abilities and interests can engage successfully with Drama for personal and academic success.

Teaching Scripted Work: Practical Workshop

  • Developing a repertoire of approaching texts from a performance and technical perspective
  • Linking your explorations to the English curriculum
  • Expanding your knowledge of texts appropriate for the drama studio and English classroom
  • Developing rich scripted work at Key Stage 3
  • Methods of assessment: marking criteria and matching levels to GCSE grades

Teaching Devising Skills at Key Stage 3: Practical Workshop 

  • Embedding devising skills and developing confidence in the creative process
  • Expanding your toolkit: exploring methods of delivering the devising element in your drama studio, with ideas for schemes of work and teaching activities
  • Encouraging students to take creative risks
  • Using written work to support, rather than undermine, the pleasure of practical work
  • Embracing digital technology to inspire and support the devising process

2.45 – 3.15pm
Enriching Your Curriculum 

  • Exploring opportunities for extra-curricular provision
  • Supporting and stretching the most able with your choice of curriculum
  • Opportunities to review and adjust your own curriculum in the light of today’s course

Susie Ferguson

Susie Ferguson has taught Drama for 18 years, and was a Head of Drama at the Holt School for 8 years. In addition to her continued outstanding teaching in the classroom at The Piggott School, she also works regularly with the
Learning departments of the National Theatre and Old Vic,as well as designing GCSE and A Level production and
practitioner notes for Disney Theatrical Group.
