ABOUT THIS WEBINAR
This webinar will examine the key areas for focus when teaching Greek Theatre, and strategies for successfully onboarding the critical knowledge and understanding. It will consider the importance of the visual materials, and how students can embed them into their ‘comparative’ 20 mark essays.
One of the biggest challenges for many teachers in the new Classical Civilisation A level has been the requirement to deploy secondary sources and scholars. This webinar will address this concern directly, providing you with advice about how to incorporate modern scholarship. There will also be an analysis of how the papers have been marked and the elements necessary for examination success.
Join examiner and Head of Department Ben, who will also examine exemplar materials, considering the question “what makes a successful 30 mark Greek Theatre essay?” and helping you to apply the key principles covered in the webinar.

What exactly in meant by the mark schmes’ requirements to engage with ‘secondary sources, scholars and/or academic work?
4.20-4.35pm: Take part in a marking exercise
- You will have been sent some student essays in advance of the webinar, and we will discuss the marks for these, along with tips on how to apply the mark scheme.
4.35-4.50pm: The role of visual materials within the specification and how to embed these in an otherwise textual component
Identifying good (and less good) uses of visual materials in the exemplar essays and pointers on how to turbocharge these for the best results.
Ben is a current OCR A Level examiner for Greek Theatre and teaches at RGS Worcester. He has been Head of Classics for 11 years and, latterly, Head of Humanities, leading a faculty of 20+ colleagues. He has delivered extensive success, and value-add, in both current and the previous OCR and AQA Classical Civilisation specifications, including 100% A*-C in recent years at both GCSE and A-level. He has particular experience of managing cohorts with broad academic ranges, working with students in Years 7 to 13.
