11.00 – 12.20pm: Teaching AS and First Year Psychology Topics

  • Unpicking the content within Social Influence, Memory, Attachment, Psychopathology, Research Methods, Approaches in Psychology and Bio- Psychology
  • Possible approaches to teach the content
  • How to teach students to handle the mathematical elements

with a coffee break at 11.30am

12.20 – 1.00pm: The AS exam

  • Analysing the AOs and the marking criteria
  • Marking workshop with example student responses
  • Different question types, common mistakes and strategies for improvement

2.00 – 3.00pm: Teaching the Second Year A Level topics

  • The ‘grey areas’- extra first year A Level content which is not covered at AS – when to teach them and some possible solutions
  • Research Methods: the requirements for year 2
  • How to make the right decisions about which options to choose

3.00 – 3.30pm: The A Level Exam

  • The exam requirements: how will the paper be assessed?
  • Marking guidance and advice for the new year 2 material
  • Marking activity with example student responses
  • The question types and how to prepare students for longer answer responses

Jean-Marc Lawton is an experienced Senior A Level examiner and has over 20 years experience of teaching A Level psychology. He has also worked as a Head of Psychology in a large Sixth Form College in south west England. He is a prolific author of text books and revision guides for A Level Psychology and makes regular contributions to Psychology Review.
