ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course is a new course focusing on using digital technology to enhance performance in GCSE Latin. The course will focus on key areas that digital technology can be used in Latin lessons not only to give the ‘wow’ factor, but also to demonstrate how DT can be used to invigorate teaching, add extra dimensions to particular aspects, and enhance overall performance.

Practical strategies and approaches for teaching both Language and Literature will be discussed in some detail and depth, as well as ways in which DT can be used to maximise marks in the run up to exams.

10.00 – 10.50am – Overview – The Wow Factor of using digital technology in GCSE Latin

  • Introducing fresh approaches to using digital technology in the classroom, moving beyond conventional use of ICT to address how to invigorate and transform teaching and learning in the classroom.
  • Examine how digital devices can inspire a passion for the subject
  • Investigate how using digital tech can both improve productivity and alleviate the burdens of teacher workload.

10.50 – 11.10am – Break

11.10 – 12.30 pm: Using Digital Technology in Teaching Language

  • Strategies and approaches which focus on the practical aspects of using digital technology to improve understanding of grammar and recall of vocabulary.
  • Explore how Nearpod can engage students’ interest in grammar, enabling teachers to check for understanding of accidence and syntax.
  • Find out more about the benefits of repeated practice, highlighting the best applications to provide creative embedding of the fundamentals of grammar.
  • On vocabulary, how to move beyond flashcards to spaced repetition programs (such as Anki) that assist pupils to learn material on a far more permanent basis.

12.30 – 1.30p: Lunch

1.30 – 2.30pm: Using Digital Technology in Teaching Literature

  • Ways to use different technologies and ideas to make literature come alive in the classroom.
  • Using student engagement software to bring the material to life
  • Exploring technologies that can assist students and teachers create collaborative translations, commentaries and background notes in the classroom.
  • How to check immediately to see how well students know the material.
  • Approaches to essay writing and marking, looking at the benefits of comparative judgement packages to assess work.

2.30 – 3.00pm: Using Digital Technology to Motivate and Engage

  • Methods to creatively use a range of tools to motivate and engage all students in the classroom.
  • Explore the gamification of learning in Latin, assessing how tools like Gimkit and Classtools can genuinely inspire continued interest in the subject, making lessons compelling and the difficult stuff accessible.
  • Investigating tools that provide assistance with routine administrative tasks,

3.00 – 3.05 – Afternoon break

3.05 – 3.45pm: The Exams- Using DT to Maximise Marks

  • Strategies and approaches to Using digital technology to prepare for examinations.
  • Using the VLE effectively

Alan Chadwick is Head of Classics at the City of London Freemen’s School. He has developed his own Latin teaching website – CyberCaesar. Since implementing a variety of digital strategies towards learning, student recruitment figures have doubled and 97% of pupils have achieved A*-A grades at GCSE.
