This webinar will provide students with valuable insights into the Eduqas GCSE course. It will provide tips and guidance for students in how to adapt their approach to their studies in order to achieve a level 7 to 9 at GCSE. This webinar will give study skills that will help students to work more independently and confidently and identify the characteristics of a high achieving students at GCSE Drama across all three components


  • Consolidate your understanding and your Teacher’s expectations of the three key components at GCSE
  • Review the demands of the component three written exam
  • Take away lots of ideas for how to structure independent study time to continue theoretical knowledge for the written exam
  • Advice and tips on how to maximise your independent study time
  • Identify areas of overlap across all key components and how to utilise this knowledge to inform your learning and skills development over the two years
  • Gain insight and top tips from an Eduqas examiner on how to develop original and highly imaginative work for component one and component two practical work and
  • Heads up on expectations required in the coursework


4.30 – 4.35 pm: Welcome and Introduction

  • A short recap of Drama skills/knowledge that are most important for GCSE?
  • Identifying strengths and areas for improvement

4.35 – 4.55pm:  Successful approaches to the written aspects of the Eduqas GCSE

  • Component One – Methods of research, recording rehearsal notes and developing meaningful illustrative material
  • Component Three – How to successfully be able to write as a director, performer and designer for different questions in Section A
  • Ways to support your ideas with reference to the wider social and historical context of the play.
  • Structuring answers on set texts for top marks – ensuring that your response is relevant and detailed
  • Resources to help you focus your independent study of your Section A playtext – suggestions of annotations to make as you read the text;  of wider reading to enhance your understanding of the text, activities to help you creatively explore your ideas for realising the set text
  • Writing a Live Theatre Review – How to effectively analyse and evaluate and embed subject terminology in your writing. How to structure a review.

4.55 – 5.10pm: Approaches to devising for Component 1 and choosing the right practitioner/style for you                                 

  • Approaches to devising a more advanced performance – thematic approach to stimulus, more exploring secondary stimuli, more advanced concepts
  • Top tips on how to record valuable information during the devising process to make written reports easier and more manageable
  • How to apply the working methods of a chosen practitioner or theatre company when devising, inclusion rehearsal techniques. Finding the right fit for you.
  • Getting ahead on the theoretical study of the practitioner or theatre company before commencing practical work; watching how practitioners and/or theatre companies work, studying their influences, uniting their artistic intentions with your own etc

5.10 – 5.25pm: Approaching the scripted component and coursework                                                                        

  • Exploring plays from a range of contexts and genres
  • Experimenting practically in order to realise your artistic intentions
  • Approaches to text and rehearsal techniques to enhance your performance

Ishani Thorpe

Ishani Thorpe is Head of Drama the Royal High School Bath. Ishani is an experienced Eduqas examiner in all three components. An outstanding teacher, Ishani has taught and prepared students for the Eduqas GCSE and A-level examinations for over eight years, achieving grades 7-9 year on year. In addition, Ishani is a founding member of the Band of Mothers ensemble and frequently writes, performs, and participates in theatre workshops with them.
