ABOUT THIS COURSE
This brand-new course will provide ideas and strategies to help raise attainment of lower grade AQA GCSE PE students. We will consider classroom strategies, examination performance and maximising NEA (Non-Examined Assessment) marks. Concepts will begin from introducing GCSE learning in KS3 practical teaching, identifying common aspects of the course that are challenging for lower performing students and particular techniques to help students access as many marks across the course as possible. We will look at practical and theory teaching strategies, frameworks to support the extended questions and how effective feedback can help learners progress in all aspects of the course.BENEFITS OF ATTENDING

- Developing GCSE PE practical performances through specific core PE planning
- Active ideas to maximise engagement
10.40am: Barriers to Achieving Higher Grades in AQA GCSE PE
- Highlighting challenging theory topics and ways to make these more accessible
- Identifying and overcoming common misconceptions across theory topics
- Developing an understanding of the assessment objectives with a focus on AO1 and AO2
- Promoting frameworks and scaffolds to support student written responses

- Review of example answers on short answer questions
- Interpreting exam questions correctly
- Time management and planning in an exam
- Including relevant examples in written responses
12.15pm: Extended Questions for Lower Ability Students
- Understanding what the different command words are looking for
- Supporting students with frameworks and scaffolds in these questions
- Practical strategies and activities to develop AO3 statements

COURSE LEADER
Nicki Hartley is the director of Pathway to Progress Education, specialising in supporting staff and students to maximise performance in academic PE qualifications. She is a former Director of Sport at state grammar and independent schools and has managed academic PE across three schools for the past twelve years. She is an experienced GCSE PE examiner and A-Level PE moderator and is incredibly passionate about courses being accessible and engaging for all. Nicki has worked in collaboration with The Everlearner and WannaTeachPE to support colleagues and learners across the country in developing knowledge and confidence in examination PE courses.
