ABOUT THIS COURSE
This exciting new course is designed for PE teachers and PE leads/Heads of Department who want to revolutionise their approach to PE by adopting the Athletic Skills Model (ASM) – a practical, scientifically grounded framework for designing and implementing movement-rich programmes that develop adaptable and versatile movers.The ASM Physical Education Instructor – Level 1 is the first of three progressive levels leading to full ASM Advanced Instructor certification. The course introduces the ASM vision and key concepts, including the first building block: the Fundamental 10 and demonstrates how schools can reimagine PE curriculum design with movement and physical literacy at its core.Grounded in contemporary movement science, this course equips practitioners with inclusive, practical strategies to create learning environments that support all pupils in becoming confident, physically literate individuals. COURSE LEADER
Martina Navarro is Director of ASM UK and a Senior Lecturer in Skill Acquisition at the University of Portsmouth. With a background in both education and sport, she has led numerous applied research projects exploring the development of movement competence, non-linear pedagogy, and the design of enriched learning environments. Martina’s research focuses on how skill acquisition principles can be practically applied within PE and sport settings to support inclusive and engaging movement experiences. She works nationally and internationally to support the implementation of the ASM across schools, clubs, and sports organisations—empowering practitioners to embed research-informed practice that promotes physical literacy and lifelong participation.
Alec Masson is a highly experienced physical education expert-practitioner with over 21 years of experience working in schools. He has held a range of leadership roles including Head of Physical Education, Head of Faculty, Assistant Headteacher, and Specialist Leader of Education. Alec has also worked as an ITT mentor and coach, as well as an International Project Lead. His expertise includes designing and implementing inclusive PE curricula tailored to school and community needs, and conducting whole-school reviews to support PE improvement across multi-academy trusts. Alec is a member of the International School Sport Federation’s (ISF) Physical Education Teaching Expert Group and has delivered CPD to over 350 PE teachers globally, including at the inaugural World Teacher Games in Toulon, France (2025). He is also a Regional Advocate for the Association for Physical Education (AfPE). In his current role as ASM Head of Physical Education UK, Alec works with schools nationally and internationally to embed ASM into practice, enhancing movement-based learning and promoting physical literacy for all pupils.
