Join A-Level History expert examiner Keith Milne for an opportunity to really develop exam techniques and skills that will ensure progression to the higher levels of the mark scheme in the exam. A particular focus will be given to how to extend performance in the interpretations question – how should students be proving the concept of ‘convincing’ and how they prove understanding of the content of the extract. A secondary focus will be the qualities of an outstanding essay and especially what an essay in a Breadth paper really should cover.

  • Knowing when you have learned enough

4.20 – 4.55pm: The key things to prepare and to perfect in essay responses
  • What examiners are looking for in developing an excellent answer in breadth
  • Student Activity: improving essay skills, and especially the focus on change and continuity over time
  • How examiners mark and rank essay answers. The importance of an effective introduction
  • What examiners really want to see in balanced responses. The key tips.

 4.55 – 5.25pm: Interpretations Questions
  • Best practice in the evaluation of opinion
  • How to move argument away from notions of reliability and accuracy alone
  • Student Activity: Reviewing responses – what are the indicators of a L4 and L5 response
  • How to structure the perfect response

5.25 – 5.30pm: Final tips to do your very best

He is Chief Moderator with a major exam board and has authored and advised on a series of popular books including those detailing how to succeed with the NEA. He is an experienced Head of History and leads a number of courses exploring the routes to success at A-Level History.
