ABOUT THIS COURSE

This brand-new, must attend course is intended to provide all teachers with a fresh vision of planning for GCSE French success from ‘Day 1’ in KS3. It will look at building cohesion across all staff members of the Languages Department, as well as throughout the five years of languages learning. The course will focus on long- and medium-term planning, in terms of topics covered, skills developed and grammatical knowledge acquisition. It will provide delegates with strategies for classroom teaching in KS3, covering not only the four key skills of language learning, but also the organisational and self-management skills needed for the highest attainment.

  • Considering practical ways to embed these skills in KS3 French
  • Developing rituals and routines in the KS3 classroom
  • Demonstrating the value of long-term topic and grammatical planning over 5 years: from Year 7 to 11
  • How to ensure a cohesive approach to teaching and learning from all staff to maximise student attainment

11.20am: Exploring Different Aspects of Long-Term Planning:
  • Exploring topics covered across KS3 as they build into KS4
  • Developing language learning skills – reading, listening, writing, speaking – in readiness for KS4 and beyond
  • Introducing form and usage of grammatical structures as a foundation for future learning
  • Embedding good habits for students to become independent and resilient learners
  • Developing the use of chosen and allocated electronic platforms

12.30pm: Lunch
1.30pm: Strategies for Classroom Teaching in KS3 – Productive skills
  • Practical ways to embed vocabulary learning in KS3
  • Maximising phonics in KS3
  • Speak, speak, speak in KS3
  • How to build writing skills in KS3
  • Communicating the ‘joy’ of making mistakes! Formative assessment

2.40pm: Strategies for Classroom Teaching in KS3 – Receptive skills
  • Preparing students to love to listen in KS3
  • Practical ways to develop reading in KS3
  • Engaging students beyond the classroom

Katherine Golding

COURSE LEADER

Katherine Golding is a former Head of Department and retired MFL teacher with extensive experience. She has successfully prepared students for GCSE (AQA and Edexcel), A-Level (AQA and Edexcel) and Pre-U examinations in French in current and previous iterations of the respective specifications. She has taught students aged 9-19 in a range of educational frameworks and successfully mentored both PGCE students and new teachers. Additionally, she marks for both AQA and Edexcel and holds the SSAT Diploma for Innovative Teaching.
