The AQA GCSE in English Language requires a substantial coverage of a range of skills to ensure that students achieve the key grades of 4 and 5. This NEW course will look at the most challenging aspects of the specification and how they can be taught effectively in the classroom with a series of practical examples to achieve these grades. The course uses feedback from the 2018 examinations to provide you with the most up to date information regarding GCSE standards and how to make sure that your students can meet them throughout the course and in their final assessments.


  • Develop resources and strategies for planning schemes of work in the AQA English Language GCSE
  • Understand more the new grading structure, particularly the Grade 4/5 and the standards required for each of the new grades and performance descriptors for GCSE (9-1)
  • Gain an understanding on how to teach comparison, context, writer’s purpose and personal interpretation and a range of other skills more effectively to Grade 4/5 students
  • Increase your understanding of the different forms of assessment available in the classroom to reinforce these skills

10.00 – 10.30am: The challenges of AQA GCSE English Language

  • Understanding the content, grading structure, skills being assessed in AQA GCSE English Language
  • Feedback from the 2018 AQA examinations and the specific issues around the 4/5 Grade students
  • How teachers can utilise exam feedback to strengthen their results with students at Grades 4 and 5
  • Discussing the range of texts that need to be taught and resources available to teachers for the AQA specification
  • Increase your understanding of the different forms of assessment to use in the classroom and which are most appropriate for ensuring student success at Grades 4 and 5 with AQA

10.30 – 11.15am: Teaching the AQA GCSE English Language effectively to Grade 4 and 5 students

  • Effectively teaching non-fiction and fiction texts from a range of centuries
  • Take away ideas and suggestions for teaching these texts so as to maintain student progress
  • Reviewing the AQA short answer questions: how to teach these to mid-range students to ensure final success

11.15 – 11.30am: Discussion: coffee break


11.30 – 12.45pm: The importance of Writer’s Technique, Comparison and Personal Interpretation and how to teach these effectively to Grade 4 and 5 students

  • What is required of Grade 4 and 5 students in the AQA specification – understanding the standard, post summer 2018 results
  • Effectively teaching writer’s technique – language and structure and how to ensure understanding by the less able
  • Comparison of non- fiction texts and the secrets of success
  • How to get your students to evaluate and interpret texts effectively
  • Explore exemplar materials showing good practice

12.45 – 1.45pm: Lunch and informal discussion


1.45 – 3.00pm: Teaching the writing skills effectively to Grade 4/5 students

  • Teaching Creative and Descriptive writing to mid-range students so that they make progress
  • Approaching persuasive and transactional writing in the classroom
  • The importance of SPaG and how to bring this into your teaching
  • What AQA examiners are looking for in the writing tasks, with exemplars

3.00 – 3.15pm: Discussion: afternoon tea


3.15 – 4.00pm: Structuring the AQA GCSE English Language course to ensure mid-range students succeed

  • How to build a skills foundation at KS3 in English
  • Developing resources and strategies for structuring the GCSE courses in English Language over two or three years
  • Approaching linear assessments and keeping students on track, with Examiner Tips
  • Share examples of good practice in the classroom

Paul Dodd

Paul is an experienced English expert who has worked as a teacher for over 20 years and within a major exam board before becoming an independent educational consultant. He was a teacher of English, a Head of Department and a Director of Studies for over twenty years, teaching at schools in the United Kingdom and abroad. He then became Head of English at one of the leading exam boards and was involved in the development of the last two sets of English GCSEs and A Levels with Ofqual and the Department of Education. He is also part of the accreditation panels for a Regulator in English. As a consultant he is widely involved in a range of activities, including the training of teachers in the new specifications both in training courses and with individual Departments. He has authored a whole series of teacher resources such as lesson plans and trial assessments at both GCSE and A Level. He has authored several works on A Level English literary texts ranging from Romantic Poetry to Modern Drama and he examines for two UK exam boards and one international board in A Level English Literature. He is also a Principal Examiner for GCSE English Literature and an Associate University Lecturer in English. At the present time he is heavily involved in supporting teachers in the new English qualifications leading to the first assessments in 2017.
