4.00 pm – Introduction, welcome and sound check

4.05 pm – Translation into Spanish

  • Common vocabulary mistakes – repeat offenders and false friends
  • Common grammar challenges to identify and master
    – Tenses
    – Subjunctive
    – Passive and avoidance
    – Word order
  • Examination technique – 3 key rules for translating into Spanish
    – Do you understand the passage? Its context, its structure, its message?
    – Checking your work: spellings, agreements, accents, verb endings, articles
    – Has every word been translated?
  • A look at some recent examination questions: where did the candidates lose marks?

4.20 pm – Activity

A “multiple-choice” translation task

  • Read a short passage in English to be translated into Spanish
  • Complete the activity
  • Compare final versions and explain any challenges

4.35 pm Translation into English

  • What if it’s a literary or historical text that I don’t understand?
  • Using course materials and texts for translation practice
  • Examination technique – 3 key rules for translating into English
    – Do you understand the passage? Its context, its structure, its message?
    – Does it make sense in English? Check your work for spellings, capitalisation, articles (or not), word order, tense matching
    – Has every word been translated?
  • A look at some recent examination questions: where did the candidates lose marks?

4.45 pm Activity

  • Translation challenge: a detailed look at difficult to translate sentences
  • What are the challenges?
  • How would you translate them?
  • A look at some recent examination questions: where did the candidates lose marks?
